Can we avoid surgery?

There are many medical conditions where patients are advised to undergo surgery (e.g. vertebral/spinal cord diseases).  However, many of them are unable to go for surgery due to various reasons including inability to undergo anesthesia, multiple comorbid conditions, extreme weakness, fear of surgery, and sometimes financial reasons too.  Ayurveda is a ray of hope for these patients.  We should give sufficient chance for alternative medicines like Ayurveda to try and treat such conditions.

Ayurvedic science is not against surgery.  In fact it is proven that Sushruta, the great ancient Indian surgeon, had invented the technique of plastic surgery.  Also, the most referred textbook of ayurvedic medicine, Charak Samhita, also mentions that sometimes there is no alternative to surgery.  However, there are some conditions where surgery can be avoided or postponed to buy some time for final decision.

DECISION MAKING:  According to ayurveda exact time of surgery in the disease process is very important.  There is a even a saying in sushrut samhita that the one dose not know when to use the knife, is a thief!!  Decision of surgery must be taken considering all the factors like the patient's age, general condition, other illnesses, gravity of symptoms, prognosis, and various alternatives.

For ailments like growths, i.e., tumors and cysts, surgical removal is considered as a first option.  However, simple benign tumors like lipomas do not need urgent removal with surgery unless they are causing significant discomfort.

Back specialists often use the term conservative treatment to describe any treatment modality that does not involve surgery.  Treatment will depend on the seriousness of your condition.  In many low back pain cases and spine conditions, Ayurveda can help alleviate low back pain: Substantial improvement is seen in patients with degenerated spine and even compression fracture patients. Mild pain medications may be used to relieve pain.  Panchakarma and special massage is used to take the pressure off of your spine, and special exercise are used to assist in reducing muscle tightness and inflammation, and improve mobility and strength.

The goal of treatment is to make the patient comfortable, reduce further degeneration, and get you back to normal activities of daily living as soon as possible. As a last resort, and only if all other conservative treatments fail, surgery might be considered.

There are following conditions where it is worth trying ayurvedic treatment to avoid surgery.

Uterine fibroids/dysmenorrhea.

Appendicitis.

Preauricular cyst.

Anal Fistula.

Anal Fissure.

Hemorrhoids.

Avoiding Coronary Bypass Surgery.

Preventions is of course better than cure in any disease, but this rule applies most to heart conditions.  Heart is an organ, where your life is at stake and you should take every precaution to protect it.

But if at all your coronaries are blocked, is it possible to remove the block with the help of Ayurveda?  The answer is yes.  I agree that nobody can claim to 'cure' the disease and nobody can 'guarantee' the results, but it is seen in many patients that combination yoga, ayurveda, and lifestyle changes leads to vast improvement in circulation of heart and in turn reduce the chance of infarct.  I have seen many patients with significant coronary artery disease leading normal lives with the help of above modalities.
